Keys to Successful Smoothing

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED.

  • Every client can benefit from a KeraPod service. How many times have we heard our clients say “I love it when you do my hair but I can never do it the same myself”? Remember, we spent years mastering our craft, however KeraPod is the best style support service we can possibly perform. “It all begins with the finished look”! If the texture isn’t right for a desired look, then change the texture, loosen the curl, change the growth pattern, or create large bouncing curls. Every texture is now achievable.

Tip: Ask all your clients how they manage their hair at home, often for them it is difficult. This can open the door to begin talking to them about the benefits of KeraPod Smoothing Services. Once they have experienced it, you’ll have a client for life!

  • Yes, it is essential. KeraPod offers 3 different treatments. Your choice is dependent on the finished look your client wishes to achieve: Smooth, Curly, Wavy, Frizz Reduction, or Style Support.

Establishing the texture of your client’s hair will affect the amount of product to be used.

The porosity of the hair will affect the heat temperature required when using the iron.

Tip: Have your client bring pictures of finished looks. What he or she may see as straight, curly, wavy or smooth can be very different to our personal interpretation of these.

  • Regular use of styling and finishing products can build up on the hair. Hard water can leave a resistant deposit on the hair. All of these things can create a barrier to smoothing treatments penetrating into the hair where the bonds need to reside to be effective. KeraPod Clarifying Shampoo helps to remove these deposits, ensuring deep penetration of the product, creating optimum results from the treatment.

Tip: When the hair is wet, slide the blade of your scissors down a small section of hair. Any build-up will be removed onto the blade of your scissor, indicating the need for KeraPod Clarifying Shampoo.

  • The new bonds lay inside the cortex of the hair, then link together to hold the hair in it’s new shape eg: straight, wavy or curly.

Tip: To ensure your client gets the best life expectancy from their treatment, build the Home Care Shampoo and Conditioner into the price of the service. This will help lock the treatment inside the hair, resulting in the best possible life expectancy.

  • Yes, only if the hair is thick in texture or exceptionally long. Apply by dabbing about every 4 inches down the hair, then smooth through with your fingers. Comb through with a fine tooth comb to remove any excess product [this can then be applied to the next section].

Tip: Over-applying product will only result in fumes when drying or ironing the hair. This will not make the desired result better.

  • An immaculate blow-dry is essential, as this helps the bonds to penetrate into the hair and begin linking together and hold the hair in its new shape. The finished result of the blow-dry should almost look like you’ve already ironed the hair.

Tip: Having to perform more passes than required with the iron could result in a slight lightening of the client’s hair color.

    Follow this heat guide:

    350°F: Fine/Double Processed/Porous Hair

    380°F: Medium Textured/Tinted Hair

400-450°F: Course, Resistant, Extremely Curly Hair

  • If you have performed an ‘immaculate blow-dry’ the average number of passes should be around 4 at the base and mid-shaft of the hair; 2-3 at the more porous ends of the hair. Look for the shine to ‘pop’ on the hair. This is telling you that the cuticle layers are laying flat, locking in the smoothing treatment.

Tip: There is no benefit to performing more passes with the iron once the shine is visible. This can de-moisturize the hair and could create a straight frizz result.

  • If all guidelines are followed and supported by the ‘at home’ regimen, the average the treatments should last: Ultimate; 10-12 weeks. Express; 6-8 weeks. Renew; approx. 4 weeks.

Tip: All Kerapod treatments are complimentary to each other. Therefore, if an Ultimate Smoothing client wants a ‘top-up’ after only 8 weeks, you can perform an Express Treatment on her/him to boost the results.

  • Smoothing is not straightening. Smoothing will reduce curl, eliminate frizz, and provide ease of styling. It does not break the Di-Sulfide bonds in the hair—only a chemical straightener (eg: Japanese Straightening) can do this [They contain ingredients such as Sodium Hydroxide or Ammonium Thioglycolate]. The down side to a permanent straightening service is it is permanent and eventually will need to be cut out. Kerapod Smoothing will eventually disperse from the hair, leaving it in exactly the condition and degree of texture it was before the service. The major benefit is there is no growing-out of KeraPod and the service can be performed over the once treated hair with success.

Tip: Manage your client’s expectations. If the client has received a chemical straightening service in the past, they may expect completely straight hair. They are possibly not a Smoothing Client. Kerapod can remove curl, frizz and give ultimate manageability.

  • Hair length and texture will vary this however as an average service the timing is:

    • Ultimate Smoothing Treatment: 90 mins
    • Express Treatment: 50 mins
    • Renew: 40 mins

Tip: Advise your client of this timing during your consultation. This service can-not be rushed. It will only result in your client receiving a less than satisfactory result that will not last to its full potential.

  • Yes. However, it is important to close down the permanent color service by following the manufacturers instructions (eg: after removing color use an after color conditioner.). This stops the coloring process. Kerapod will actually help in reducing color fade and enhance vibrancy of your client’s color.

If coloring after a KeraPod Smoothing Service, allow 1 full week before applying permanent color.

Tip: Remember, any hair treated with permanent color must be considered porous. Therefore, it is important to follow the recommended flat iron temperature in the FAQs and How To videos on the Education page.

  • It is generally not recommended as there are no clinical tests or data highlighting any potential hazards.

Tip: Recommend that you clients use Kerapod Home Care, which has an external topical effect, achieving smooth, frizz-free looks.

  • The hair is made up of approximately 95% Keratin. This begins to deplete from our late teens. Supplementing the keratin levels through KeraPod Services and KeraPod Home Care products will result in the hair having renewed vitality and a healthy, youthful appearance.
